THE UPSC BLUEPRINT / PRACTICE

Mains Answer Writing

Turn knowledge into relevant, well-structured and time-conscious answers.

ANSWER DEVELOPMENT

The five-step writing cycle

01 · Decode

  • Underline the directive: discuss, examine, analyse, evaluate or critically assess.
  • Identify the subject, boundaries and sub-parts of the question.

02 · Outline

  • Draft a short introduction aligned with the exact demand.
  • Group body points into logical dimensions and choose examples.

03 · Write

  • Prioritize direct relevance over generic information.
  • Use headings, concise arguments and evidence where appropriate.

04 · Evaluate

  • Check whether every part of the question was addressed.
  • Review factual accuracy, balance, clarity and time spent.

05 · Rewrite

  • Improve one weak introduction, argument or conclusion.
  • Compare the revised version against the original.
SELF-REVIEW

Five questions after every answer

  1. Did I respond to the directive rather than the broad topic?
  2. Did I cover all parts of the question?
  3. Are my arguments supported with accurate examples or evidence?
  4. Is the structure easy for an examiner to follow?
  5. Could I reproduce this quality within the required time?
